The sun going down beside Rinjani, seen from Pergasingan Hill above a sea of cloud

Pergasingan Hill

A hill near Sembalun that looks straight across at Rinjani. A shorter, easier climb, and a night in a tent for the sunset and the sunrise.

Pergasingan Hill, Bukit Pergasingan in Indonesian, is a hill near Sembalun on Lombok, across the valley from Rinjani. It is not Rinjani, and I would rather say that plainly: from the camp you look straight at the volcano, but you do not climb it. The climb is shorter and easier than any of my Rinjani treks, but it is still a climb, up through the rice fields to a camp on the hill. You sleep there in a tent and walk down the next morning. It runs private only, so the pace is yours.

Why this trek

Rinjani in front of you

From camp you look across the valley at Rinjani, the one view of it you never get while you are climbing it. The photo at the top of this page was taken from the hill, with the sun going down beside it.

Shorter and easier, and still a climb

You walk up in the afternoon, three to four hours through the fields. The next morning you are up at 4:30 for a climb of 45 to 60 minutes to the sunrise, not at 2 as on the Rinjani summit push.

The trees on the hill

On the way up your guide tells you about the trees here and what people use them for.

Back down by ten

On the second morning you are off the hill by 10:00, so the rest of the day is yours.

Day by day

You spend one night on the hill, and the night before it at my guesthouse in Senaru. Times are typical: your guide sets the pace on the day.

The waterfalls, and a night in Senaru

We pick you up wherever you are on Lombok: the airport, Bangsal harbour, Senggigi, Mataram, Kuta or your hotel, at a time we agree with you, and drive you to Senaru. Plan to be there in the morning: your guide then takes you to the two waterfalls in the village, Sendang Gile and Tiu Kelep, and the entrance is in the price. In the evening you check in at my guesthouse, also included, and sleep. Shoes, poles, jacket and headlamp can be rented there that evening.

Up through the rice fields to camp for the sunset

If you arrived too late for the waterfalls the day before, your guide takes you there this morning. At 13:00 we drive round to Sembalun, about an hour, and from there it is three to four hours on foot up through the rice fields while your guide tells you about the trees. You watch the sunset with Rinjani in front of you, and sleep in a tent on the hill.

Effort & who it's for

Easy-moderate

It is the easiest of my treks, and it is still a climb. The first afternoon is three to four hours uphill from Sembalun, about 500 m of height through the rice fields. The next morning you are up at 4:30 for another 45 to 60 minutes to the sunrise point, and you are down by 10:00. If you want to weigh it against the volcano, the difficulty page shows what each Rinjani trek asks of you.

A good fit if

  • Two or more days on Rinjani sound like too much
  • You want to see the volcano rather than climb it
  • You want a night in a tent without a 2am start
  • You would like your own guide and your own pace

Think twice if

  • You want to stand on Rinjani, the 2-day trek to the crater rim is the next step up
  • You want the crater lake, that is on Rinjani itself
  • You want comfort, this is a night in a tent
  • You are travelling solo on a tight budget, private solo is USD 200

What's included

Like every trek, one price covers your guide, transport, your meals, snacks and drinking water on the hill, the camping gear, the entrance fees and the night in Senaru.

Included

  • Guide and a porter
  • Private transport: pickup anywhere on Lombok, drop-off in Mataram, Senggigi or Bangsal harbour
  • One night in my Senaru guesthouse before the trek
