Overview

Mount Rinjani stands at 3,726 metres on the island of Lombok, East of Bali. It is an active volcano with a crater lake called Segara Anak at 2,000 metres inside the caldera. The trek takes two or three days depending on your route.

Rinjani is trekable year-round. The dry season (April through November) offers the best conditions. The wet season (December to March) brings heavier rain, slippery trails, and reduced visibility — trekking is harder and less predictable. All trekkers must be accompanied by a licensed guide and hold a valid park permit.

Starting points: Sembalun vs Senaru

There are two trailheads. Most routes start from one and end at the other.

Sembalun

The eastern gateway. Sits at 1,150 metres. This is where summit routes begin. The trail climbs through open savanna and grassland before hitting volcanic scree. It is steeper but more direct.

Senaru

The northern gateway. Sits at 600 metres. The trail starts in dense tropical forest and reaches the crater rim at 2,641 metres. Used for routes that focus on the lake and hot springs rather than the summit.

Route options

Four packages are available. Each includes pickup, accommodation, meals, guides, porters, camping gear, and park fees.

  • Crater & Summit Adventure — 2 days / 2 nights. Crater rim (2,641m) plus second summit (3,250m). From $165.
  • Rinjani Peak Challenge — 2 days / 2 nights. Crater rim plus true summit (3,726m). From $165.
  • Crater, Lake & Hot Springs — 3 days / 3 nights. Senaru rim, Segara Anak Lake, hot springs. From $195.
  • Ultimate Summit & Lake — 3 days / 3 nights. Summit, crater rim, lake, hot springs. From $185. Most popular.

Difficulty & fitness

Rinjani is not a casual hike. The summit push involves steep volcanic scree, loose gravel, and thin air. Expect 8 to 10 hours of walking per day on the summit route.

You do not need to be an athlete. But you should be able to walk uphill for several hours without stopping. Regular cardio training — running, cycling, stair climbing — for four to six weeks before your trek will make a significant difference.

The crater rim routes (non-summit) are moderate. Manageable for anyone with reasonable fitness who hikes occasionally.

Best time to go

The dry season runs April through November. July and August offer the driest conditions and clearest skies. They are also the busiest months.

April, May, and October offer a good balance — fewer crowds, reasonable weather. June and September sit in the middle.

The wet season (December through March) brings heavy rain, slippery trails, and poor visibility. Trekking is possible but more demanding and less predictable. Dry season is strongly recommended.

What to pack

Your guide team provides tents, sleeping bags, mattresses, meals, and cooking equipment. You carry your personal items in a daypack. Porters handle the heavy gear.

Essentials: hiking boots with ankle support, warm layers for the summit push (it drops below freezing), headlamp, rain jacket, sunscreen, and a refillable water bottle.

Boots, jackets, and gloves can be rented locally in Sembalun if you are travelling light.

Altitude & health

The summit reaches 3,726 metres. Mild altitude symptoms — headache, shortness of breath, light nausea — are common above 3,000 metres. These pass quickly for most people.

Serious altitude sickness is rare on Rinjani because you ascend and descend within the same day. You do not sleep at extreme altitude. Still, stay hydrated, eat well, and tell your guide immediately if you feel unwell.

All guides carry basic first aid equipment. The team monitors every trekker throughout the climb.

Travel insurance: Zainal's package includes basic trekking insurance, but not helicopter evacuation — which can cost $5,000–$15,000 at altitude. World Nomads covers this and is what most experienced trekkers use for Southeast Asia.
