The mountains
Mount Rinjani — 3,726m, Lombok
The highest point in West Nusa Tenggara and the second-highest volcano in Indonesia. An active stratovolcano with a 6km-wide caldera containing Segara Anak lake and natural hot springs. The trek offers summit, lake, and hot springs in one route. Easily reached from Bali by fast boat.
Mount Semeru — 3,676m, East Java
The highest mountain on Java and the highest island peak in Indonesia. Semeru (also called Mahameru) is an active volcano famous for its near-daily eruptions and the deep volcanic sand of the upper slopes. Made famous in Indonesia by the film ‘5 Cm’ (2012). Requires advance permit booking.

Difficulty
Semeru’s summit push is notorious for ‘pasir berbisik’ — deep volcanic sand where every step up slides back half a step. Most trekkers take 4–5 hours to cover 4 kilometres to the summit. The crater rim is also an active eruption zone requiring timed entry.
Rinjani is steep and long but has firmer footing on most sections. The scree near the summit is loose but manageable. The effort is spread across multiple days with rest at camp. Per day, Semeru’s summit section is harder. Over the full trip, they are comparable in total demand.
Scenery
Rinjani: open savannah on the ascent from Sembalun, dramatic crater rim views over two islands (Lombok and Bali), turquoise Segara Anak lake inside the caldera, steam rising from Gunung Baru Jari cone, and hot springs at the lake’s edge.
Semeru: dense forest on the approach, the iconic Ranu Kumbolo lake (one of Java’s most photographed spots), open moorland above the treeline, and the iconic summit cone with regular gas plumes.
Logistics
Rinjani is significantly easier to organise for international visitors. All-inclusive packages from Mount Rinjani Adventures handle everything — permits, transport from anywhere on Lombok, meals, camping gear, guides, and porters. No advance planning beyond booking a date.
Semeru requires more preparation: permits must be booked independently online (limited and sell out fast), gear must be rented or brought separately, and guides are arranged locally. Reach East Java by flight from Bali to Surabaya or Malang (1.5h), then a 3–4 hour overland transfer to Ranu Pani trailhead.
Which should you choose?
Choose Rinjani if: you want a complete multi-day experience with lake, hot springs, and summit; you prefer an all-inclusive package without logistical complexity; you are based in Bali or Lombok; or it is your first major Indonesian volcano.
Choose Semeru if: you specifically want to summit the highest peak on Java; you are comfortable with independent trekking logistics; you are visiting East Java; or you want the challenge of the volcanic sand summit push.
Both are exceptional. If you can only do one, Rinjani offers more variety in a single route and is easier to make happen.
