First light on the summit ridge of Mount Rinjani

Rinjani Summit

The fast line to the top: straight up the Sembalun side for a sunrise summit, then back down the same way. One night on the mountain.

2 days · 1 night Up & down Sembalun Summit 3,726 m Challenging effort From USD 190 pp

This is the quickest way to the true summit of Rinjani. You walk up the open Sembalun side, camp one night on the crater rim, then push to the 3,726 m summit for sunrise and come straight back down the same trail. No lake, no hot springs, just the top, in the least time off. You still need to be fit: the summit night is long, cold and early.

Why this trek

Sunrise from 3,726 m

Stand on the highest point on Lombok as the light comes up over Bali and Sumbawa. On a clear morning the shadow of the mountain stretches west across the sea.

Straight to the summit

No detour to the lake or the hot springs. You trade the scenery of the full crossing for speed: the true summit on a single overnight.

One night on the rim

A single camp on the Sembalun crater rim at 2,641 m, high above the caldera. Dinner at altitude, an early night, then the alarm goes at 2 am.

The least time off

Two days and one night on the mountain, plus the included night in our Senaru guesthouse before you start. The choice when your calendar is tight.

Two days on the mountain, up and back down the Sembalun side. Times are typical: your guide sets the pace on the day.

The night you arrive

We pick you up wherever you are on Lombok: the airport, Bangsal harbour, Senggigi, Mataram, Kuta or your hotel, at a time we agree with you. From there it is a drive to our guesthouse in Senaru, included in the price. You check in, meet your guide, get the briefing and sleep. Shoes, poles, jacket and headlamp can be rented here that evening.

Day 1Sembalun gate → crater rim

Up through the savannah

Breakfast at the guesthouse, then a 45 to 60 minute drive to the Sembalun gate for registration at 8:00. You meet your porters, and the walk begins across open savannah with the volcano ahead of you. Lunch at Pos 2 around midday, where the forest thins and the views open. The trail steepens for the last stretch to the rim, and camp is set on the edge by mid-afternoon with the caldera dropping away below.

Summit at dawn, then down

Up at 2:00 for hot tea in cold air, and on the trail by 2:30. Three hours of steep, loose volcanic scree in the dark, following the headlamp ahead of you. The summit comes around 5:30, and the sun breaks the horizon: Bali's Agung out of the sea to the west, the crater lake catching first light below. Back to camp for breakfast, pack up, and the long descent to the Sembalun gate by early afternoon, where your transfer is waiting.

Effort & who it's for

Challenging

The summit push is the real test: three hours of steep volcanic scree in the dark, starting at 2 am, with the air thinning above 3,000 metres. There is no technical climbing, no ropes and no scrambling. If you exercise regularly and can walk uphill for six hours, you are ready. Your guides set the pace, and they have done this over 500 times.

A good fit if

  • You are reasonably fit and walk or hike regularly
  • You are happy with an early, cold summit start in the dark
  • You want the true summit without adding extra days
  • You can sleep, roughly, in a tent at altitude

Think twice if

  • Serious altitude has troubled you before, the summit is 3,726 m
  • You want comfort, this is camping with a simple toilet tent
  • Steep, loose ground and heights make you very uneasy

Good to know

Will I get altitude sickness?

Some people feel it above 3,000 m. Sleeping on the crater rim first helps you acclimatise, and your guide keeps an eye on everyone during the summit push. You can always turn back: the mountain is not going anywhere.

What about food and allergies?

Your porters cook fresh on the mountain: rice, noodles, vegetables, eggs, fruit, and plenty of it. Tell us about allergies or a vegetarian, vegan or gluten-free diet when you book and we cook around it. With a severe allergy we will suggest going private, because then the team shops and cooks only for you.

What does private actually mean?

Your own guide and porters, on your own start date, with no strangers joining. It does not have to be solo: a couple or a group of friends is private too. Same route, same camps, just more say over pace and timing.

How basic is it?

This is real camping. The tent, sleeping bag and mat are provided and carried for you, and the toilet is a simple toilet tent. It is not a lodge, and for most people that turns out to be part of why it stays with them.

Can I book this solo?

Yes. Join a shared departure and you walk with a small group without paying a single supplement. If sharing a tent with people you have just met feels like a lot, say so and we set up a tent of your own on the rim.
