What each covers
2-day trek — crater rim + summit
Day 1: Sembalun → crater rim camp (2,641m). Long but manageable.
Day 2: Summit push at 2am → summit (3,726m) → back to Sembalun.
What you see: the crater rim, the summit, the sunrise above the clouds.
What you miss: Segara Anak Lake, the hot springs, the Senaru descent.
3-day trek — summit + lake + hot springs
Day 1: Sembalun → crater rim camp.
Day 2: Summit push → descend to Segara Anak Lake → camp at the lake shore.
Day 3: Hot springs at dawn → climb out → Senaru descent.
What you get: everything. The full Rinjani experience.
The physical difference
The 2-day has the same elevation gain compressed into two days. Day 2 starts at 2am for the summit push and ends with a full descent — a 14+ hour day. The 3-day spreads the effort more evenly, gives you an extra night at altitude, and still delivers the summit.
For most people: 3 days is harder on paper but easier on the body.

Which should you choose?
Choose 2 days if: you have limited time, you have solid hiking fitness, and the summit is your main goal.
Choose 3 days if: you want the full experience, you prefer a more comfortable pace, or it is your first time trekking at altitude.
The 3-day Ultimate Summit & Lake is the most popular choice for good reason. The lake alone is worth the extra day.
