The 3-day route: Ultimate Summit & Lake

This is the most popular route. Starts from Sembalun, ends in Senaru. Covers the summit (3,726m), crater rim, Segara Anak Lake, and hot springs.

Day 1 — Sembalun to Crater Rim

Start: Sembalun Lawang (1,156m) End: Crater Rim (2,641m) ~10km +1,485m gain 7–9 hours

The day begins with a pre-dawn pickup from your hotel and an early transfer to the Sembalun trailhead. After permit registration, the walk begins through open savannah — wide skies, volcanic ridgelines in the distance, and Lombok visible below. The first 3–4 hours are gradual. The trail steepens in the final section as you climb toward the rim. Three official rest points along the route. Arrive at camp by early afternoon.

The crater rim camp at 2,641m faces west — the sunset over Lombok and the ocean is extraordinary. Dinner at camp: rice, vegetables, chicken, hot drinks. Lights out early. Tomorrow starts at 2am.

  • Distance: approximately 10 kilometres
  • Elevation gain: +1,485 metres
  • Walking time: 7–9 hours (including rest stops)
  • Difficulty: Moderate to hard

Day 2 — Summit + Crater Lake

Hardest day Wake: 1:30–2:00 AM 10–12 hours total

The summit push is the hardest section of the trek. Headlamps on at 2am. The first section is steep volcanic scree — two steps forward, half a step back. Above 3,000 metres the air thins noticeably. The guide sets a steady pace. Most trekkers reach the summit (3,726m) between 5:30 and 6:00 AM as the sun rises over Sumbawa. The view from the top: Lombok, Bali, Sumbawa, and the caldera below.

After sunrise photographs and a rest, the descent begins — back to the rim, then steeply down into the caldera toward Segara Anak Lake. The descent to the lake takes 3–4 hours on a switchback trail. Camp at the lake shore (2,000m). Afternoon is free — the lake is calm, some trekkers swim. Dinner at the lake. Sleep.

  • Summit push: crater rim (2,641m) to true summit (3,726m) — 3–4 hours, 3km, very steep loose scree in the dark
  • Descend to rim: 2 hours
  • Descend into crater to lake (2,000m): 3–4 hours
  • Total walking: 10–12 hours
  • Difficulty: Very hard (summit section), moderate (lake descent)

Day 3 — Hot Springs + Senaru Exit

Wake: 5:00 AM 6–8 hours Ends: Senaru village (601m)

The final morning. Wake before dawn and walk along the lake shore to the natural hot springs (Aik Kalak). The springs are hot enough to sit in — steam rising in the cold morning air, the lake calm behind you. After the springs, ascend back to the crater rim (Plawangan Senaru). Then a long descent through dense jungle — completely different from the open savannah on the Sembalun side. Arrive at Senaru village mid-afternoon. Transfer to your hotel.

  • Hot springs visit: 30–60 minutes
  • Climb from lake back to Plawangan Senaru rim: 3 hours
  • Descent from rim to Senaru village (601m): 3–4 hours through jungle

The 2-day route: Peak Challenge

For trekkers short on time or prioritising the summit over the lake and hot springs. Out and back from Sembalun.

Day 1 — Sembalun to Crater Rim

Same as 3-day route 7–9 hours

Identical to the first day of the 3-day route. Transfer to the Sembalun trailhead, permit registration, and the long steady climb through savannah to the crater rim camp at 2,641m. Arrive by early afternoon. Rest and prepare for the 2am summit push.

Day 2 — Summit + Return to Sembalun

Very long day Wake: 1:30–2:00 AM 10–13 hours total

The same summit experience as the 3-day route. Headlamps at 2am, summit by dawn, sunrise views across Lombok and Sumbawa. After the summit, the descent returns to the crater rim — and then all the way back down to Sembalun. The descent to Sembalun (rather than to Senaru) takes longer and is harder on the legs.

For fit trekkers with limited time, this is a strong option. For most people who can spare three days: choose the traverse.

  • Summit push: 3–4 hours up
  • Return to crater rim: 2 hours
  • Descend to Sembalun: 4–5 hours
  • Total: 10–13 hours

What to expect at camp

Camps are run by the porter team. Tent is set up before you arrive. A camp chair and table are provided. Dinner is cooked fresh — rice, stir-fried vegetables, chicken or egg, soup, fruit. Breakfast the next morning before the summit push is smaller: sweet tea, bread or biscuits. The goal is fuel, not feast.

The crater rim camp is exposed to wind. Temperatures drop to 5–10°C at night. Get into your sleeping bag early. The lake camp is more sheltered. Temperatures are milder at 2,000m.
