The crossing at a slower pace. Same summit, same lake, same hot springs as the 3-day route. Spread over four days: no brutal days, and a whole day to live at the water instead of walking past it.
Day by day
Pickup & the night in Senaru
Your trek really starts the evening before. We pick you up wherever you are on Lombok, the airport, Bangsal Harbour, Senggigi, Mataram, Kuta, or your hotel, at a time we confirm with you based on your arrival. From there we drive to our guesthouse in Senaru, included in the price, where you check in, meet your guide, get the trek briefing, and rest for the night.
Sembalun to crater rim
6:30: Breakfast at the Senaru guesthouse.
7:15: We leave for the Sembalun gate, about 45 to 60 minutes through Lombok's green interior, tobacco fields and quiet roads.
8:00: Registration at the Sembalun gate. Meet your porters, a final gear check, and the trek begins. Open savanna, the volcano ahead.
12:00: Lunch at Pos 2. The terrain shifts. Grasslands give way to loose rock.
15:00: Sembalun Crater Rim (2,639m). The caldera opens below. Segara Anak Lake, turquoise and still, with the small cone of Barujari at its centre. Camp is already set.
18:00: Dinner on the rim. The sun drops fast. Stars appear. Early to bed. Tomorrow starts at 2am.
Summit, lake, hot springs
02:00: Wake up. Hot tea in the dark. Headlamps on. The one hard morning on this route.
02:30: Summit push. Three hours of steep volcanic scree. The trail is narrow and loose. Cold wind. Thin air. You climb in silence.
05:30: The summit. 3,726 metres. The sun breaks the horizon. The shadow of Rinjani stretches across Lombok and the sea. Bali's Agung floats in the west. The crater lake glows below. You stand at the highest point on the island.
06:30: Descend to camp. Breakfast.
09:00: Pack up. Descend into the caldera. The trail switchbacks down volcanic scree to the lake shore.
12:00: Segara Anak Lake. Lunch at the water's edge.
13:00: Walk to the hot springs. Natural sulfur pools steaming at the lake shore. Soak your legs after the summit push. And unlike the 3-day route, you are not walking out tomorrow.
18:00: Dinner at lake camp. The crater walls block the wind. It is warm down here. Two nights at the water start now.
A full day at the lake
Morning: No alarm. Breakfast when you wake. The light comes over the crater walls slowly, and this morning it belongs to you. Photographers get the lake at its stillest. Swimmers get water nobody else is in yet.
Afternoon: The hot springs again, as long as you like this time. Swim, rest, watch Barujari across the water. This is the day the 3-day trekkers do not get.
Evening: Dinner at lake camp. Second night at the water. The exact shape of these days is not fixed: your guide plans them with your group, around your pace and what you want most from the lake.
The way down
07:00: Breakfast by the lake. Last look at the water and the crater walls.
08:00: Climb out of the caldera to the Senaru crater rim. Steep ascent, about two hours, on rested legs.
10:00: Reach the Senaru rim (2,641m). Begin the long descent through tropical forest. Roots, vines, filtered light.
14:00: Arrive at Senaru gate. Included transfer to Mataram, Senggigi, or Bangsal Harbor.
"They took a very good care of us the whole way and planned the hike according to our pace. The views were absolutely insane and we had so much fun laughing, chatting and enjoying the climb. It was tough but it's so so worth it."

Difficulty: Medium
The summit morning is the summit morning: 2am start, steep scree, 3,726 metres. That does not change. What changes is everything around it. The days are shorter, day three is pure rest, and you climb out of the caldera on recovered legs instead of the day after the summit. If the 3-day crossing sounds too heavy, this is the same mountain without the grind. No technical climbing anywhere on the route. Moderate fitness required. The guides know exactly when to push and when to rest.
The whole mountain,
without the rush.
